What Colors Do Lagotto Romagnolo Puppies Come In?

Colors that is not allowed: AKC official club standardds do not allow a black or gray coat, this includes balck or gray patches, or black skin pigmentation. The nose of a logotto is not allowed to be black. The nose color can shade from a flesh like color to a light pinkish brown all of the way from a light brown to a dark brown color.

Tricolor with and without a distinct “Tan Point Pattern”
The rarest colorings of Lagotti is called a tri-color which usually presents as a brown or a brown roan coat (an even mix of brown and white hairs intermingled) with white or brown patches and tan markings. The base colors of a tricolored lagotto must be within the brown, orange roan, or white palette. The coat has a distinct three color distinction.
Any lagotto that has three colors is a tricolor even though the three colors might be in various areas of the body such as the ears.
Tan markings: can be honey, apricot, or fawn colored .
Tan Point Pattern: This genetic trait creates specific symmetrical tan markings above each eye, on the muzzle, chest, legs, and under the tail. They always appear in the exact same areas that would be seen on several breeds such as a Doberman, Rottweiler, Pinschers, Gordon Setter, Black and Tan Coonhound and a few other breeds.
Why is TRICOLOR lagotto so rare?
Because the specific “tan point gene” is a recessive trait. This means a puppy must inherit a copy of the tan point gene from both of its parents. The particular gene is one of the rarest color expressions in the entire breed. Because it is so difficult to obtain with two breeding pairs, it is highly prized among breed enthusiasts but incredibly difficult for breeders to produce consistently.
THE UNIQUE LAGOTTO BREED COAT TRANSFORMATION

COLORS, HAIR PATTERNS (TICKING & ROANING)
The most common terms used to describe the Lagotto Romagnolo’s coat color change is fading and the sometimes the hair pattern changes as brown or orange roan depending upon the color.
Birth: at birth the logotto coat colors are usually the most intense that they will ever be. This is usually the most pronounced in dark brown and dark orange. If the lagotto has dark brown hair at birth it will usually appear black. This breed does not have black hair in its color palette. The dark brown color usually will last at least two weeks. Any white patches are also intense and clearly defined. On some pups tiny dark brown appearing black freckles “ticking” start to break out on the muzzle and the lower legs.
Weeks 3-8 weeks: The brown now can look dark chocolate but not black anymore. The orange coat can still be very pronounced. The roaning coat pattern can be seen in a darker mottling effect (if the puppy is going to change to roan). A brown puppy can become a lither shade of brown whereas a brown roan puppy can become darker because the white hairs get replaced with brown hairs. Any ticking will slowly spread onto the belly and then across the back and the pup’s body.
Months 2-3: solid colors may be less intense in color, softer color shades looking lighter colorings. The roaning hair patterns can be getting more distinct within the mottling.
Months 4-6: The intense colors usually start to fade. Brown and orange can be a much lighter shade. Some brown coats may take on a silvery gray coloring. The roaning hair patterns can be getting more distinct eliminating the mottling look. The roaning look can go from mottling to a roan pattern with white hairs interspersed almost evenly with colored hairs. If the pup had a dark brown mask it will usually be fading and less defined.
Months 6-12: the pup is developing its adult coat. The appearance in color and hair patterns can be very different than the younger puppy coat especially in brown and orange colors. An adult coat has gone from soft and wavy as a pup to curled hairs that become tight and because of this some of the ticking can appear like small swirls.
As the adult continues to age some dogs hair colors will still fade. Some brown colors will shade in with beautiful silvery or a silvery-brownish coat where the brown hairs are. Some will stay brown, although usually a much lighter shade of brown.
A white and brown lagotto may have ticking or “freckles” which are small spots of brown hair appearing amongst white hair. The background hair remains white but the tick is very dark hair almost appearing black. There can be a high contrast in the boundary between any brown and white hairs.
If the puppy had a dark brown mask it may blend better in the face hair as an adult but be more prominent when the hair is clipped short.
